What is a GST Invoice and When is it Mandatory?
A GST Invoice (also referred to as a Tax Invoice) is a legal document issued by a registered taxpayer when selling taxable goods or services in India. Under the GST regime, a valid tax invoice is the primary document required by the buyer to claim Input Tax Credit (ITC).
Under Section 31 of the CGST Act, 2017, issuing a tax invoice is mandatory whenever taxable goods or services are supplied, unless the value of the supply is less than ₹200 and the recipient is unregistered and does not request an invoice.
• Tax Invoice: Issued for taxable supplies where GST is charged and ITC can be claimed.
• Bill of Supply: Issued when supplying exempt goods/services or when the supplier is registered under the GST Composition Scheme (where tax cannot be charged to customers).
